HI 

I am the potoo

I spend most of my time sitting on the edges of tree branches, 

pretending to be a stick or dead leaf

it’s not as easy as it looks

I sing virtually exclusively around the period of the full moon

because, according to legend,

I am a mournful spirit in love with the spirit of the moon

I approve of this so much.

So I’m pretty sure I just closed a very long, difficult and occasionally painful chapter in my life: I finally got together with a couple of my old college friends for drinks, we talked and laughed and had fun, and then we went our separate ways.

Sure, sounds easy right? WRONG. These particular friends, if you remember, were the ones who had the unfortunate tendency to be unrepentantly self-absorbed. I went out of my way to make them happy, often to the point I was LOSING MONEY by doing so, and it was rare for them to acknowledge it in any meaningful way. In short, while I had a good year of fun with them, the following year and a half was a hellish emotional romp and not the relaxing conclusion of my college career that I was hoping for.

Following this chain of events, they dropped off the FUCKING MAP. No, really! I didn’t hear ANYTHING from ANY OF THEM for a full year! Fortunately, by the time they started to contact me again, I had wised up and figured out these were friends, just not close friends.

Still, tonight went well. We talked about music, books, etc. and we all left on a good note. The drive home was very lonely and sad, but knowing that I can approach them without submitting to their personalities is comforting…

…That being said…

A hug would be nice…Just sayin’ >.>
